Spartans in Fifth Place After First Day of the Canadian Collegiate Invitational


East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team shot an even-par 576 (289-287) on the first day of play and is in fifth place among 10 teams at the inaugural Canadian Collegiate Invitational, being played at the par-72, 7,157-yard Oviibyrd Golf Club in Foots Bay, Ontario, Canada.

The two-day, 54-hole tournament finishes on Tuesday.

Missouri fired a 22-under par 554 (281-273) and leads the field by 11 shots over Michigan and Notre Dame, tied for second place at 11-under par 565. Kent State is in third place at 6-under par 570, with the Spartans rounding out the top-five teams.

Senior Ashton McCulloch, the 2023 Canadian Amateur champion and 2024 runner-up, is tied for fifth place at 7-under par 137 (69-68). McCulloch finished his two rounds with 12 birdies, including seven during the second round.

Junior Caleb Bond, who fired a 4-under par 68 in the second round, is tied for ninth place at 4-under par 140 (72-68).

Freshman Joe Canitano is in 36th place at 5-over par 149 (73-76), classmate Julian Menser is tied for 44th place at 9-over par 153 (78-75) and sophomore Lorenzo Pinili is tied for 46th place at 10-over par 154 (75-79).

Playing as an individual, freshman Drew Miller shot a 12-over par 156 (79-77) and is tied for 49th place.

Michigan State tees off at 9 a.m. in Tuesday’s final round.

The inaugural Canadian Collegiate Invitational marks the first time that an NCAA Division I men’s golf tournament will be played in Canada. The tournament features NCAA Division I men’s golf teams with prominent Canadian ties along with the team champions of the 2024 Canadian University/College Championship.

The individual winner will receive an exemption into the 2025 RBC Canadian Open, with the top-five receiving exemptions into the 2025 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship.
