Cougs Jump Two Spots in Final Round at Canadian Collegiate Invitational

FOOTS BAY, Canada – Washington State golfer Ben Borgida fired a career-best six-under-par, 66, to push the Cougars up the leaderboard during Tuesday’s final round at the 2024 Canadian Collegiate Invitational, held at the par-72, 7,157-yard Oviinbyrd Golf Club.

As a team, the Cougars moved up two spots over the final 18 holes after shooting a 4-over, 292, their best round of the tournament, to finish seventh at +17, 881. Notre Dame rallied from an 11-shot deficit entering the final day to post a 5-shot victory over first-day leader Missouri and Michigan.

Borgida, a redshirt-sophomore, posted a 6-under, 66, to move from 14th into a tie for fifth in the final standings, finishing the 54-hole event at 8-under, 208. Borgida’s bogey-free round included six birdies as he bettered his previous low round by one stroke, when he shot 4-under, 67, in the second round of the Oregon State Invitational last season. It also marked the first Top-5 finish of his collegiate career.

Junior Sam Renner finished tournament with a 3-over, 75, giving him a three-round score of 3-over, 219, tied for 27th overall. Renner managed just one birdie on his round after posting 10 total during the first two rounds. Freshman Dylan Burcham completed his second collegiate event by matching Renner with a final round 3-over, 75, giving him a 54-hole score of 6-over, 222. Burcham’s round included three birdies en route to a 1-under, 35, on the back-9.

Fifth-year senior Drayton Joseph shot a 6-over, 78, on his first round to finish the event in 49th position, at 18-over, 234. Senior Franklin Lydra shot his best round of the tournament Tuesday, finishing with a 4-over, 76, to end the event at +27, 243, in 53rd place.

The Cougars are next in action Sept. 29-Oct. 1, when they head to the Midwest for the Wisconsin Badger Invitational in Madison, Wisc.
