McCulloch Finishes Third, Spartans Place Fifth at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational


East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State fired a 6-under par 282 in the final round and finished in fifth place among 10 teams at the inaugural Canadian Collegiate Invitational, played at the par-72, 7,157-yard Oviibyrd Golf Club in Foots Bay, Ontario, Canada.

The inaugural Canadian Collegiate Invitational marked the first time that an NCAA Division I men’s golf tournament was played in Canada. The tournament featured NCAA Division I men’s golf teams with prominent Canadian ties along with the team champions of the 2024 Canadian University/College Championship.

The Spartans finished the two-day, 54-hole tournament at 6-under par 858 (289-287-282).

Notre Dame shot a 17-under par 847 (285-280-282) and came from behind to top the field, finishing five strokes ahead of Missouri, tied for second at 12-under par 852 (281-273-298) with Michigan. Kent State placed fourth at 11-under par 853, with the Spartans at 6-under pr 858.

Michigan State was led by senior Ashton McCulloch, a native of Kingston, Ontario, Canada and the winner of the 2023 Canadian Amateur, who finished in third place at 11-under par 205 (69-68-68). McCulloch fired a 4-under par 68 in the final round, finishing his round with five birdies.

By finishing among the top-five individuals in the tournament, McCulloch receives an exemption into the 2025 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship.

McCulloch’s score of 205 is tied for the ninth-lowest 54-hole score in Michigan State history. He was one shot off his career-best collegiate mark of 12-under par 204, set last year at the Johnnie-O at Sea Island in March, 2024.

Junior Caleb Bond shot a 1-under par 71 in the final round and tied for 11th place at 5-under par 211 (72-68-71).

In his first collegiate event, freshman Joe Canitano posted an even-par 72 on Tuesday and tied for 30th place at 5-over par 221 (73-76-72).

Classmate Julian Menser had his best round of the event on Wednesday with a 1-under par 71 and tied for 34th place at 8-over par 224 (78-75-71) and sophomore Lorenzo Pinili tied for 43rd place at 15-over par 231 (75-79-77).

Playing as an individual, freshman Drew Miller shot a 16-over par 232 (79-77-76) and tied for 46th place.

After back-to-back events to start the school year, Michigan State is off until Sunday, Sept. 29 and Monday, Sept. 30 when the team plays in the Windon Memorial at Conway Farms Golf Club in…
