Cal Owns 3-1 All-Time Edge In Mixed Match-Play Event
BERKELEY – The California men’s and women’s golf teams are set to compete alongside one another against their Stanford counterparts Thursday in the fifth edition of the Big Match at Menlo Country Club in Woodside.
The action gets underway at noon PT. Live scoring for the Big Match will be available on GolfGenius.com with live coverage also available on each team’s respective social media channels.
For the second straight year, the unique clash of rival schools will feature seven mixed pairs competing head-to-head in a better ball match play format. In 2023, the Golden Bears claimed a close 4-3 win that came down to one final putt, giving Cal a 3-1 edge in the all-time event series dating back to 2018.
Pairings will tee off in 10-minute increments, ending with Cal’s top pairing of Constance Fouillet and Charlie Berridge teeing off at 1 p.m. PT. Fouillet – who led her team with 14 birdies and a 2-under-par 214 at the season-opening ANNIKA Intercollegiate two weeks ago – is one of five Cal golfers returning to the joint lineup from last season’s match win.
Also back in the lineup for the second straight year are Kaylyn Noh, Adora Liu, Olivia Lee – all of whom won points for the Bears in last year’s matchups – and men’s golf’s Kuangyu (Tony) Chen. Jieming Yang also returns for her second career Big Match appearance after earning a win in her 2022 debut, as does Daniel Heo, who played as a freshman the same year.
The Cal men are continuing a busy season-opening week following their first two days of competition at The Tindall, where they placed fourth overall at 13-under. Berridge and Heo – who will be the Cal men’s top seeds in the Big Match – posted personal collegiate-low 54-hole scores at The Tindall with 206 and 207, respectively.
Sihao Cong, a redshirt freshman, and true freshmen Ziqin (Eric) Zhou will make their Cal debuts Thursday while fellow true freshman Matthew Miyamoto joins the group in his Big Match debut. Miyamoto made the Bears’ season-opening lineup at The Tindall earlier this…
