LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The No. 5-ranked Fighting Illini men’s golf team sits in sixth place after the first day of play at the Windon Memorial Classic at Conway Farms Golf Club. Play was suspended Sunday evening due to darkness with 2-5 holes remaining in Round 2. The tournament is set to resume Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. CT with the conclusion of Round 2, followed immediately by the final 18 holes.
Three Illini have posted top-20 scores, led by sophomore Max Herendeen who closed with an impressive late-day run to climb into a tie for third place at 4-under through 33 holes. After an opening round of 73 (+2), Herendeen moved to 3-over through his first four holes of Round 2. Behind Herendeen, senior Jackson Buchanan and freshman Trey Marrion are tied for 19th at 2-over. Marrion has four holes remaining in his second round, while Buchanan has five holes left in Round 2. Sophomore Ethan Wilson is 6-over in a tie for 45th and junior Ryan Voois 15-over in a tie for 84th, each with three holes left in their second Rounds.
Freshmen Jake Birdwell and Joseph Buttress are also in the field competing as individuals. Birdwell is tied for 35th at 5-over through 32 holes, while Buttress is 88th at +20 with two holes left in his second round.
