East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team finished the first day of play at the Windon Memorial Classic, hosted by Northwestern and being played at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill.
The second round was stopped on Sunday due to darkness. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, being played on the par-71, 7,432-yard course, will conclude on Monday. Teams will finish the second round and then begin play in the third, and final, round.
Michigan State shot a 23-over par 307 in the first round and was at 14-over par through 14 holes before play was stopped and was in 16th place among 16 teams.
Arizona shot a 5-under par 279 in the first round to take the team lead, with Northwestern (3-over par 287) in second, Marquette in third place (6-over par 290), USF in fourth and Pepperdine rounded out the top-five teams.
Junior Caleb Bond and freshman Juan Velasquez were the top finishers for the Spartans, standing in a tie for 57th place at 9-over par. Bond shot a 2-over par 73 in the first round and Velasquez finished with a 5-over par 76.
Sophomore Lucas Acevedo was tied for 65th place at 11-over par. He shot an 11-over par 82 in the opening round but was at even par in the second round.
Sophomore Lucas Pinili was one shot back, in 70th place at 12-over par. He finished at 5-over par 76 in the first round and was at 7-over par in the second round.
Freshman Julian Menser is in 86th place at 18-over par, with a 15-over par 86 in the first round but bouncing back with a 3-over par in the afternoon round before play was stopped.
