Cougars Remain Fifth After 36 Holes at Badger Invitational

MADISON, Wisc. – The Washington State Men’s Golf team improved by four strokes as three Cougars went under-par Monday during the second round of play at the Badger Invitational, hosted by the University of Wisconsin on the par-72, 7,286-yard University Ridge Golf Course.

Host Wisconsin continues to lead the field at 15-under, followed by Long Beach State (-13) and Northern Illinois (-13), and Illinois State (-5).

Junior Sam Renner posted another strong round to lead WSU, firing a 5-under, 67, and is tied for second overall at 8-under, 136. Renner’s second round featured seven birdies against two bogeys, and saw him go out at 4-under par on his front nine. After a bogey on 10, Renner birdied the par-3 12th before closing with another birdie on 18. Renner’s 67 marked the third-lowest score of the day among the 90-player field and places him two-strokes behind leader William Harned from Wisconsin.

Redshirt-sophomore Ben Borgida was steady throughout his round Monday, mixing in two birdies and a bogey to go with 15 pars as he finished a 1-under, 71, for the second-straight day. Borgida jumped out quickly with a pair of birdies on the front side to finish his first nine holes at 2-under. A bogey on the par-3 17th was the only blemish on his card as he ended the second round tied for 11th overall at 2-under, 142.

Graduate student Jakob Chicoyne rebounded from an opening-round 75 Sunday to shoot a 1-under, 71, Tuesday and sits tied for 32nd at 2-over, 146. Chicoyne’s round was highlighted by four birdies, including three on the front side, while he took advantage of the par-5’s, going three-under on those holes.

Freshman Dylan Burcham posted a 4-oveer, 76, Monday, dropping three strokes over the final two holes to close his round. Burcham, who had three birdies on his round, enters Tuesday’s final round tied for 52nd at 5-over, 149. After an opening-round 77, freshman Garrett Harrison improved by two strokes Monday as he shot 3-over, 75, and finished his first 36 holes tied for 66th at 8-over, 152. Harrison will carry some momentum into Tuesday’s final round as he finished Monday with five pars and a birdie over his final six holes.

Play concludes Tuesday with a final 18-holes at the three-day Badger Invitational. Play…
