MADISON, Wisc. – Washington State junior Sam Renner captured his first collegiate individual title with a three-round score of 9-under, 207, to post a two-stroke victory Tuesday at the Badger Invitational, hosted by the University of Wisconsin on the par-72, 7,286-yard University Ridge Golf Course.
Renner’s victory helped WSU to finish in a three-way tie for fourth overall as the Cougars completed three 54-hole event at 6-over, 870, after a final round of 10-over, 298. Northern Illinois captured the team title at -9, 855, while Long Beach State and host Wisconsin both finished at 6-under, 858.
Renner entered the final round two strokes off the lead but his final-round of 1-under, 71, overcame second-round leader William Harned of Wisconsin, whose 3-over 75 was not enough to fend off Renner. Following his four-birdie, three-bogey round, Renner became the first tournament medalist for WSU since the fall of 2023, when Pono Yanagi shared co-medalist honors at the Golfweek Fall Challenge in Pawley’s Island, S.C.

Renner’s previous best finish came at last year’s National Golf Invitational where his second-place finish propelled WSU to the team title at the postseason event. His 9-under par total tied for the 13th-best finish in relation to par, in program history.
