THIS WEEK
The No. 24 Utah Men’s Golf team will look to open up Big 12 play with a strong start as the unit heads to the Lone Star State for Big 12 Match Play at the Houston Oaks Country Club in Hockley, Texas, from Oct. 7-9.
It’ll be just the 11th time in program history that Utah has competed in a tournament in Texas and the first in Hockley, after battling at the NCAA Austin Regional last season while taking fourth and advancing to the NCAA Championships.
The tournament consists of a unique format, unlike many of the competitions the Utes have participated in so far this season. The play will be Utah’s first Big 12 mid-season tournament as former Big 12 member Texas won the tournament last season.
LAST TIME OUT
The Utes competed in the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational last week in Erie, Colo., and finished in sixth on the team leaderboard. Utah finished in a tie for seventh through day one but recorded the third-lowest round by any team, putting together a team 11-under 277 to jump one spot into sixth place and marked its best round of the tournament. Four out of the five Utes climbed up the individual leaderboard at the conclusion of the tournament as Brandon Robison finished in a four-way tie for 10th place, his second top-10 placement of the season.
THE FIELD
The Utes will hit the links alongside an all-Big 12 slate of teams as 14 other conference opponents will compete for the mid-season title. At Houston Oaks Country Club, Utah will battle #2 Arizona State, Baylor, BYU, Cincinnati, #RV Colorado, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, #18 Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech, UCF, and West Virginia.
UTAH’S LINE-UP
Five Utes will compete at Houston Oaks Golf Course during the conference clash. The squad consists of the same lineup as the first three tournaments to start the season, including Braxton Watts, Brandon Robison, Davis Johnson, Sergio Jimenez, and Gabriel Palacios.
COACHES THOUGHTS
“After a quick turnaround, we are looking forward to competing in the Big 12 Match Play,” said head coach Garrett Clegg. “I have heard it is an amazing event at a world-class golf course. The format is unique in that we will be going head-to-head with different teams…
