Freshman Trent Mierl of the University of Missouri men’s golf team is off to a strong start to his winter break, winning the title at the 2024 Coachella Amateur on Wednesday.
Mierl birdied his final two holes of the day to finish with a three-round tally of -11 (67-70-68) on the par-72 course. He teed off the par-four 18th – a hole he double-bogeyed the day prior – tied for the lead but his birdie three, coupled with a par by Avery Lazarski, earned the outright crown for Mierl after 54 holes of action.
“I hit the ball really well and found a lot of fairways,” Mierl said. “Just tried to hit a lot of greens and let the putter do the work. Just took care of business. It’s good momentum and keep the good golf going. Try to bring some good game toward the team and keep it rolling.”
Overall, Mierl birdied 16 holes during the 54 holes of action to earn the title in the 84-man field. Mizzou senior Trevor Mierl also competed and placed 27th overall at +5 (72-72-77).
The Coachella Amateur took place on the North Course at Terra Lago Golf Club in Indio, California and is part of the Troon Saguaro Amateur Series, which is a world-ranked amateur tournament series.
As a freshman, Mierl has competed in three events for Mizzou, posting a 72.89 stroke average in nine rounds. He was named SEC Freshman of the Week after his collegiate debut where he finished third overall at the Golfweek “Put Me In Coach” Invitational.
Mierl and the Tigers officially return to action on Feb. 3, competing at the National Invitational Tournament in Arizona.
