Tagmarshal acquires wind speed technology WindIQ

Tagmarshal announced that it has acquired WindIQ, a company that measures real-time wind speed, direction and precise hole location hyperlocally.

WindIQ was formed by Ben Holbrook in 2023 as a way to obtain more precise wind speed measurements than current apps were able to display. Holbrook, an enthusiastic golfer, had experience as a tech entrepreneur and investor and was frustrated by the lack of local wind conditions on offer; typical apps of the time would only show conditions at locations miles away from the golf course.

“I always grappled with how golfers have so much information at hand about the distance to the bunkers and other visible hazards but rely on gut feel when it comes to wind,” Holbrook said. “Wind is a golfer’s invisible hazard. WindIQ finally gives golfers the wind information they need to make better shot decisions.”

The WindIQ technology measures wind speed and direction on the green once per second using rugged solar-powered and waterproof ultrasonic transducers that attach to the top of each pin. They require no cellular, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi tech, and use multi-band GPS to give precise hole locations every day.

The technology is a perfect fit for Tagmarshal’s on-course optimization software, adding wind data to its data-driven insights and adding more value for the owners and operators using the software suite.

“We are continually looking at innovative ways to improve the player experience using technology,” said Bodo Sieber, CEO of Tagmarshal. “WindIQ’s vision aligns closely with Tagmarshal’s and we are delighted to bring Ben’s expertise aboard to help us bring golf into the tech-enabled future.”

Golfers can obtain real-time wind speed and direction by using Tagmarshal’s Caddie app or 2Way screen devices, along with available screens for tee boxes and yardage markers. WindIQ also gives real-time recommendations that consider how the wind will impact distance, club selection, shot trajectory and target.

Holbrook will be at the PGA Show in Orlando Jan. 21-24 at the Tagmarshal booth to showcase the new technology and how it interfaces with Tagmarshal’s suite of tools.
