East Lansing, Mich. – Senior Brooke Biermann fired a 3-under par 69 in the first round and Michigan State’s women’s golf team is in third place among 18 teams after the first round of the Purdue Puerto Rico Classic, being played at the Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament continues on Monday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start and continues through Tuesday. The 18-team field includes 12 teams ranked among the top-50 in the country in the latest NCAA rankings.
The Spartans posted a team score of 1-under par 287 to stand in third place.
Vanderbilt leads the field at 5-under par 283, with Ole Miss in second place at 4-under par 284. MSU follows in third place, North Florida is in fourth place (1-over par 289), while Auburn, Northwestern and LSU are tied for fifth place with scores of 2-over par 290.
Biermann, starting on the 4th hole, had birdies on three of her first six holes and, finished the round with four birdies and a 3-under par 69 to lead the Spartans, tying for fourth place.
Senior Katie Lu shot an even-par 72 and is tied for 21st place, while junior Taylor Kehoe and sophomore Ana Sofia Murica each posted scores of 1-over par 73 and are tied for 28th place. Freshman Catalina Monroy closed out the team scoring, tying for 73rd place at 5-over par 77.
Junior Paula Balanzategui, playing as an individual, is tied for fourth place at 3-under par 69.
Michigan State will tee off starting on the 1st hole, playing alongside Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and North Florida.
