Kanpai Finishes Second to Lead Terps at Spartan Suncoast Classic


SARASOTA, FL — Senior Nicha Kanpai finished second overall to lead the Maryland women’s golf team at the Spartan Suncoast Classic at the Palm Aire Country Club Monday in Sarasota, Fla.

Kanpai shot a 211 (73-70-68), which was five strokes under par total. Kanpai birdied or parred 49 of the 54 holes in the event. She picked up her second top five finish of the year and fourth top 20 finish. 

Junior Tammy Wu finished tied for 13th for her best career finish. She earned a score of 216 (73-71-72), which was even and also a career best. She made 10 birdies in the event.

Freshman Anna Pillard tied for 25th with a score of 219 (77-72-70), which was +3. Pillard has finished in the top 30 in three of four career events.

Graduate student Karla Elena Vazquez Setzer earned a score of 226 (77-74-75), which was +10. Senior Panassaya Somchit shot a 231 (77-79-75).

As a team, Maryland finished seventh of 15 teams competing with a score of 872 (300-287-285), which was +8.

Next, the Terrapins will compete in the Chevron Collegiate in Houston Feb. 23-25.
