WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The regular season came to a close for the University of Notre Dame’s men’s golf team Sunday as they took fifth place at the Boilermaker Invitational with a final score of 843(-9). A strong second round of 272(-12) set the Irish up for the fifth place overall finish while Mike Qiu positioned himself for a top-20 individual placement with his season-low score of 66(-5). All five Irish participants finished among the top-50 over the two-day weekend tournament to help lead the Irish in their final competition before the postseason.
Freshman Qiu led the Irish with an overall score of 212(-1) through three rounds as he finished among the top-20 for the second consecutive tournament, placing 18th overall. He opened the tournament with a first round score of 72(+1) before finishing the day with a 66(-5) score to position himself strongly heading into the final day of competition. His round three score of 74(+3) placed him 18th overall and first among all Irish competitors.
A pair of sophomores tied for 23rd overall as Jacob Modelski and Rocco Salvitti each finished with a score of 213(E). Salvitti led the team on day one, pacing the Irish with the lowest opening round score of the tournament, 67(-4) as he held first through the first 18-holes. He then capped the day with a score of 69(-2) in the second round before closing out the tournament with a 77(+6) score Sunday. Classmate Modleski opened with a score of 73(+2) before finishing with a pair of scores at or below par for the 213(E) final. Modleski closed out Saturday’s second round with a score of 69(-2) before finishing an even-par 71(E) on the final day of competition.
Nate Stevens and Calen Sanderson finished one stroke apart as the former took 43rd overall with a score of 216(+3) while Sanderson placed 47th with a 217(+4) score. Stevens posted scores of 73(+2) and 75(+4) on the first day before following it up with a round three score of 68(-3) to close out the regular season, jumping up 25 spots from day one. Sanderson’s season-low second round score of 68(-3) set him up for the top-50 finish as well after posting a score of 76(+5) in round one. The junior’s final round score of 73(+1) placed him 47th overall at the end of competition.
The men jump right back into competition as they prepare for the ACC Championships this week in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The opening round is set to begin on Thursday, April 24.
