Nicha Kanpai Set for NCAA Regionals


COLLEGE PARK, MD — Junior Nicha Kanpai of the Maryland women’s golf team is set to compete in NCAA Regionals beginning Monday, May 5 in Charlottesville, Va.

Kanpai earned an individual bid to the Charlottesville Regional, which will be played at the Birdwood Golf Course. Kanpai will play 18 holes Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Live scoring will be available here and a live stream will be available here.

Kanpai is one of six individuals competing in the Regional. 

Each of six regionals sites feature 12 teams and six individuals competing. The top five teams (30 teams total) and the low individual not on an advancing team (six individuals total) from each regional site will advance to compete in the national championships to be played May 16-21 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. Championship play will be hosted by Texas, with the final three days of the championships televised live by the GOLF Channel.

Kanpai has four top 10 finishes this year, including a win at the Cougar Classic.

This will be Kanpai’s third appearance in NCAA Regionals. Last year, Kanpai tied for 24th at the Bryan Regional in Bryan, Texas with her score of 221 (77-71-73), which was +5. 

Last week, Kanpai won a US Open Qualifying event in Springfield, Va. to qualify for the US Open presented by Ally, which will be played May 29- June 1 at the Erin Hills Golf Course in Erin, Wis.
