Cal Improves Tuesday, Eyes Championships Berth

GOLD CANYON, Ariz. – The California women’s golf team culminated an up-and-down round with three birdies on the 18th hole and is in the mix to advance to the NCAA Championships after the second day of the NCAA Gold Canyon Regional on Tuesday.

After a 15-over par first round on Monday, the Golden Bears shot 8-over on Tuesday and remain in seventh place in the overall standings. At 23-over par for the regional, Cal is five strokes behind fifth-place Auburn heading into Wednesday’s final round at Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club. The top five teams in the 12-team regional advance to the NCAA Championships later this month at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad.

The Bears had their share of struggles during Monday’s opening round, but stabilized things immediately during the front nine Tuesday, standing at 3-over par as a team at the turn. A handful of bogeys hurt Cal in the back nine before Cal registered four birdies during the final three holes – including three on No. 18 by Adora Liu, Kaylyn Noh and Claudia Lara Miravitlles.

“The team today made more pars and fewer errors, but not as any birdies dropped today,” Cal head coach Sofie Aagaard said. “We had some post-round clean-up that included approach shots and putting that will prepare us well for tomorrow. We have our work cut out for us to be a couple of strong teams ahead of us and we know the team is ready to compete in the final round.”

Junior Adora Liu followed up a strong opening round with an even better one Tuesday, carding a 1-over par 73 to put herself at 3-over for the tournament and in a tie for 16th place. Noh also shot 73 on Tuesday, registering 15 pars and is now 8-over for the tournament and among a group that includes Miravitlles and fellow teammate Constance Fouillet that is tied for 31st.

The Bears tee off at 8:55 a.m. PT on Wednesday.
