CARLSBAD, Calif. (theACC.com) – Highlighted by Paul Chang’s final-round 69 (-3), ACC champion Virginia clinched a spot in the match-play quarterfinals of the 2025 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship Monday evening at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.
The Cavaliers advance to their third consecutive appearance in the quarterfinals, becoming the only team in the country to accomplish that feat. Despite the streak, UVA has failed to advance to the semifinals, falling to the eventual national champion in each of the last two seasons (Florida in 2023 and Auburn in 2024). The Cavaliers are the only ACC team to advance to match play.
Posting a 4-under (284) for the four rounds of stroke play, Chang placed seventh and was the lone Cavalier to finish in the top 10. After beginning his round on the back nine, Chang made four birdies on the front side and carded a 33 (-3) to help seal UVA’s spot in match play with a seventh-place finish. Teammate Ben James sealed a top-30 spot in 27th, finishing at 2-over (290).
California, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest failed to qualify for match play, with the Seminoles finishing just one shot behind Ole Miss for eighth place and the final match-play spot. Following Chang’s conference-best seventh-place finish in the individual standings, defending NCAA individual champion Hiroshi Tai of Georgia Tech was the only other ACC player to finish in the top 20, tying for 18th at even par (284).
The Cavaliers will open their match-play campaign on Tuesday, May 27, against second-seeded Auburn, who won last season’s national title. The Tigers were one only four teams to finish under par in the team standings, placing second at 12-under (1140).
Golf Channel’s coverage of match play on Tuesday will begin at 1 p.m. ET and will resume at 6 p.m. ET with semifinal action. The match-play final is scheduled for Wednesday, May 28, at 6 p.m. ET.
