ROCKVILLE, Md. – Former Virginia Tech men’s golfer Trevor Cone carded a 5-under 137 (69-68) Monday at Woodmont Country Club’s North Course, capturing one of four qualifying spots for the 125th U.S. Open in the process.

Deemed “golf’s longest day,” Woodmont served as one of 10 final qualifying sites in the U.S. on June 2 where golfers attempt to persevere through 36 holes of intense, high-stakes competition to advance to the U.S. Open. Cone finished runner-up to Ryan McCormick of Middletown, N.J., who signed for a 10-under 132 (66-66).

Bryan Lee and Marc Leishman rounded out the four qualifiers at 3-under 139, following a 3-for-2 playoff.

Cone and the rest of the final qualifiers now advance to the ultimate test in golf – the U.S. Open. Oakmont Country Club, located in Oakmont, Pa., is set to host the season’s third major, June 12-15.
