Golden Bear Alumnus To Make Major Debut At Royal Portrush
BERKELEY – California men’s golf alumnus Sampson Zheng will make his major championship debut at The 153rd Open after finishing runner-up at the final qualifying event at West Lancashire in Liverpool, England, on Tuesday.
Zheng shot 68-69 (-7) in qualifying to become one of five golfers in the West Lancashire field to clinch a coveted spot in The Open, which will be played at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland on July 17-20.
The Golden Bear turned professional after concluding his collegiate career and graduating from Cal with a degree in economics in May 2024. He made an immediate impression on the Asian Tour, finishing tied for fourth in the International Series England and tied for second in the Mandiri Indonesia Open.
Zheng – a two-time All-American in 2023 and 2024 and two-time All-Pac-12 First Team selection – capped his collegiate career with the Bears by leading them to the 2024 NCAA Championship, marking the program’s first appearance since 2019. He reeled off 12 top-10 finishes in 20 events played since the start of his junior year, including five in a row from the start of March 2024 through 2024 NCAA Regional play. Zheng averaged 71.33 strokes per round across 112 rounds played in 36 collegiate events.
Three Golden Bears are expected to compete in The 153rd Open, with Zheng joining PGA Tour members Collin Morikawa and Byeong Hun An.
