MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Scarlet Knights opened their fall season in strong fashion, competing at the Gopher Invitational on September 7–8 at the pristine Windsong Farm Golf Club. The event featured a highly competitive field and provided Rutgers with an early-season test against some of the nation’s top collegiate programs.
The Scarlet Knights were led by a pair of standout performances from Jeffrey Zatorski and Luke Koenig in Minneapolis, who both set the tone with consistent play in their respective fields.
Zatorski (209) stole the spotlight early in the trip by capturing an individual title in the Minnesota Golf Classic, firing rounds of 66-71-70 to finish nine-under-par and secure the first collegiate victory of his career. The event named the Minnesota Golf Classic was an individual round that ran parallel to the Gopher Invitational. His steady play throughout the 54-hole event established him at the top of the leaderboard and signaled a breakout moment in his young career.
“The emotions were running after making a double and then bouncing back with a solid par on the par five,” said Zatorski. “When those emotions were running, I tried to keep my head down, focus on one shot at a time, and just see the shot and hit the shot—without worrying about the end result. I hit three really great shots coming down the stretch.”
Senior transfer Luke Koenig followed with a strong showing of his own in the Gopher Invitational, finishing in the top-15 on the individual leaderboard (+2). He was just ten strokes behind the leader Frankie Harris of South Carolina (+8). Koenig paced the Rutgers squad that finished in 13th place out 15 teams. (+20). His performance once again highlighted his reliability and composure on a big stage.
“Starting with the team, we had really good vibes, had really good practice rounds, learned a lot as a group, and felt great being in the heat of things,” said Koenig. “It wasn’t the round I was looking for, but I learned a lot about my game and myself, so it was a really good experience.”
