TOLEDO, Ohio – The No. 29 NC State women’s golf team finished fourth out of 12 teams at the Inverness Intercollegiate hosted by Toledo at the Inverness Club. On a course that played tough, NC State carded a 49-over 911 (311-295-295) to finish one shot ahead of fifth-place No. 24 TCU and 10 shots behind third-place Princeton.
The Pack saw two players in the top 10 with Marie Madsen and Vania Simont who tied for fifth and eighth, respectively.
Round 1
The Pack began the tournament in a tie for seventh, shooting a 27-over 311. The best team score in that round came from Florida, who was 14-over par. Simont led the Pack in the first round with a 1-over 72. She finished the round with three birdies, 11 pars and four bogeys. Simont was in a tie for second after one round and was one of three players to card a 1-over par or better in the first round.
Lea Ludwig followed with a 6-over 77 and tied for 23rd after 18 holes. Madsen had an 8-over 79 and Ellie Hildreth a 12-over 83 to round out the Pack’s lineup. Lindsay McGrath shot a 13-over 84 and Elizabeth Sullivan was 12-over par as an individual.
Round 2
NC State turned things around in the second round, moving up three spots after carding an 11-over 297, which was the second best round by a team on Monday. After starting the first round 9-over par, Madsen bounced back with a 2-under 69 in the second round, doing so behind four birdies, 12 pars and two bogeys. She moved up 19 spots to tie for fifth at 6-over par. Simont carded a 5-over 76 and stayed steady within the top five, tied with Madsen with a 6-over 148 after 36 holes.
McGrath was solid in the second round with a 2-over 73. She had a nearly clean card with 16 pars and two bogeys. Hildreth was the fourth counting score toward the Pack’s round two score with a 6-over 77. Ludwig logged a 7-over 78 in the second round and Sullivan had a 9-over 80.
Round 3
The Pack carded an 11-over 297 for the second straight round to finish the tournament one stroke ahead of TCU. Madsen and Ludwig each carded a 2-over 73, as the pair finished in fifth and 22nd, respectively. Madsen finished the tournament with an 8-over 221. The top five finish marked Madsen’s 10th top 10 finish in her career. Ludwig earned a career-high finish at 22nd, finishing with a 15-over 228. Simont registered a 3-over 74 on the final day to rack up her fourth career top 10 showing with a tie for eighth behind a 9-over 222.
