CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – Vanderbilt men’s golfer Wells Williams continued his strong 2025-26 season on Sunday, as the senior opened the 16th Cabo Collegiate carding a team-best 2-under 69.
The No. 5-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team opened the three-day tournament at Twin Dolphin Club at 8-over 292. The Commodores head into Round 2 on Monday in 12th place, 12 strokes off the lead after 18 holes of play.
Williams’ score of 2-under on Sunday marks his team-leading 11th under-par round of the 2025-26 season. The West Point, Mississippi, native extended his consecutive rounds counted streak to 54 rounds dating back to the 2023-24 season.
“Wells played solid and continues doing a great job leading our team,” said Thomas F. Roush, M.D., and Family Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Head Coach Scott Limbaugh. “I am also proud of Michael and how he responded and finished strong. I thought all of our guys had some really good moments today and have some good things to build on. However, we had some lapses in concentration, and we simply weren’t as focused as you have to be on this course. This is a championship course. It takes elite concentration and commitment levels, which make you better. I am excited about us facing some adversity, because ultimately that’s what defines you as a competitor and as a team. If you want to be really good, you have to do hard things together.”
The senior holed four birdies on Sunday, one off of freshman Michael Riebe’s team-leading five. Williams heads into Round 2 of the Cabo Collegiate in 11th place on the player leaderboard and opens Monday’s Round 2 five strokes off the lead.
Riebe finished Sunday inside the top 50 on the player leaderboard, as he carded 2-over 73 to end his day tied for 45th. After battling through adversity on Holes 2-4, the Encinitas, California, native rebounded to hole birdies on three of his final five holes in Round 1 to conclude the day at 2-over.
No. 11 Oklahoma State leads the Cabo Collegiate through 18 holes at 4-under par 280. No. 7 Arizona State and No. 9 Arkansas are tied for second place and enter Round 2 one stroke in behind the Cowboys. California’s Ziqin Zhou sits atop the player leaderboard after carding 7-under 64.
