CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – The No. 5-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team ended Round 2 at the 16th Cabo Collegiate at 1-over 285, as the Commodores sit in 11th place on the team leaderboard after 36 holes of play at Twin Dolphin Club.
The Dores slid up one spot on the leaderboard on moving day at the Cabo Collegiate, as Vandy concluded play on Monday in 11th place. Vanderbilt holds a two-round score of 9-over 577.
Freshman Jon Ed Steed carded a team-best 3-under 68 in Round 2. The freshman’s score on Tuesday was tied for the eighth-best score by a golfer. It is the eighth under-par round for the Enterprise, Alabama, native, as Steed was also one of three Commodores to collect five birdies in Round 2. The freshman moved up 23 spots on the player leaderboard on Tuesday, as Steed heads into Round 3 in a tie for 37th with a 36-hole total of 2-over 144.
“It was good to see us get off to a good start as a team,” said Thomas F. Roush, M.D., and Family Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Head Coach Scott Limbaugh. “Unfortunately, we didn’t finish the round to our standards, which is disappointing. Jon Ed looked very comfortable and in control all day and gave our team a big round. Ryan Downes battled and got a lot out of his round. Good to see Chase finish off an under-par round, and he’s looking better each day. It takes mental toughness to stay locked in and committed all day long, and that’s what this course requires. We have to keep having high demands for ourselves and for each other because when you demand more, you get more.”
Senior Wells Williams, who is searching for his second individual title at the Cabo Collegiate, ended his day inside the top 20 on the player leaderboard. The All-American heads into Tuesday’s finale in a tie for 16th with a score of 2-under 140 through 36 holes of play at the Twin Dolphin Club. The West Point, Mississippi, native concluded Round 2 at even par 71, as he has his score count for the 55th-consecutive round. Williams holds
Junior Chase Nevins, who is playing as an individual at the Cabo Collegiate, carded his fifth under-par round of the season on Monday, finishing the day at 2-under 69. The Great Falls, Virginia, native collected three birdies on the day and heads into Round 3 tied for 26th with a score of 1-over 143.
