Deacs in Second After Opening Round of ACC Championship

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – Finishing ahead of four top-25 ACC teams, the Wake Forest men’s golf team closed the first round of the ACC Championship in second place at Shark’s Tooth Golf Course on Thursday.

With an opening round score of 285 (-3), the Deacs were helped by three rounds of par or better, with junior Tom Haberer leading the charge late in the day.

Haberer carded a bogey-free back nine, closing with back-to-back birdies on his final two holes of the day. Haberer sits tied for fifth at three-under par.

Senior Jakob Melin joined Haberer inside of the top 10, as the Göteberg, Sweden native was consistent throughout the day for the Demon Deacons. Firing six birdies in his opening round, Melin finished the day tied for ninth at two-under.

Currently tied for 21st, junior Kyle Haas’ even-par round was highlighted by two birdies and an eagle on the 430-yard, par-4 tenth hole.

For the second round of stroke play, the Demon Deacons will tee off Friday with Clemson (+3) and Notre Dame (+11), with the first tee time set for 9:55 a.m. ET off hole No. 10.

From Coach Haas:

“Very nice start on a tough day. The ACC is the best conference in the country, and in order to make match play, you have to play well every day. It’s great that we started well today, but we need to keep it up for 36 more holes. Then, anything can happen in match play. We’re off of number 10 tomorrow and need to be ready to play. Go Deacs!”
