Pack Finishes in Seventh Place at NCAA Winston-Salem Regional

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men’s golf team finished in seventh place at the NCAA Winston-Salem Regional held at Bermuda Run Country Club.

The tournament conclude the first season under head coach Bo Andrews as only the top-five teams from each NCAA regional advance to next week’s NCAA Championship.

Despite falling just short of advancing, the Pack rewrote the record book this week. Its third-round score of 11-under par ranks as the third-best team score relative to par in program history, while its second-round 9-under-par performance is tied for the fourth-best round relative to par ever recorded by the program.

The Pack was led by redshirt sophomore Ryan Shim who finished in a tie for eighth place at eight-under par. After shooting a 69 and 70 on the first two days, the Virginia native fired a five-under par 66 in the third and final round to move into the top-10 of the final individual leaderboard.

The five-under par 66 in the final round is tied for the sixth-best score related to par in program history in an NCAA Regional.

Next for the Pack was Pearce Lewin in a tie for 20th place. After an opening round 73, Lewin shot a combined six-under par in the final two rounds of the event, including a four-under par 67 in the second round on Tuesday.

Evan Woosley-Reed finished two shots back of Lewin in a tie for 31st place. The Tennessee transfer had his best round of the tournament on Tuesday as he shot a three-under par 68 in the second round.

Markus Varjun was next for the Pack in a tie for 47th place while Xander Goboy rounded out the NC State lineup in a tie for 52nd place.

The five advancing teams from the regional were Virginia and Pepperdine who tied for the tournament title while Ole Miss, USC and Mississippi State also advanced.

The top-finishing individual that is not on one of the five advancing teams also receives a bid into the NCAA Championship and it looked like Shim was headed to a tiebreaker, but Kentucky’s Jacob Lang birded his final hole of the tournament to finish at 9-under and advance to next week’s championship.

The NCAA Regional marks the final tournament of the season for the Pack and the end of the first season for new head coach Bo Andrews. In his first season with NC State, Andrews guided the Pack to one team tournament title (Michael A. Marino Classic) and four top-five performances. Five NC State golfers finished with scoring averages below 72.0, the most on a single team in program…
