North Carolina’s Carson Bertagnole and Niall Sheils Donegan both shot 3-under-par 69s to lead the Tar Heels to a tie for sixth place after round one of the 2026 NCAA Men’s Championship on the North Course at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
Carolina shot 1-under 287, one of nine teams in the field of 30 to finish under par.
The Tar Heels also counted an even-par 72 by Sihan Sandhu and a 77 by Grant Roscich.
UCLA is the leader after 18 holes at 8 under par. Auburn is in second place at 6 under, Pepperdine is third at 3 under, Duke and San Diego are tied for fourth at 2 under and UNC, Arizona, Texas and Vanderbilt are tied for sixth.
Bertagnole and Sheils Donegan are tied for ninth in the individual standings, three strokes behind the leaders, Ian Maspat (San Diego), Connor Williams (Arizona State) and William Jennings (Alabama).
The Tar Heels play in the morning wave on Saturday in the second round.
