Bertagnole Named GCAA Freshman All-America

The Golf Coaches Association of America named Tar Heel freshman Carson Bertagnole one of five Freshman All-Americas.

The Pinehurst, N.C., native tied for 19th in the 2026 NCAA Championship in Carlsbad, Calif., Bertagnole shot rounds of 69-72-72-71 and sank an 8-footer for birdie on the 72nd hole to secure Carolina a berth in a four-way playoff for the final spots in match play.

Bertagnole became the fourth Tar Heel to shoot par or better or in all four rounds in an NCAA Championship, joining Dylan Menante in 2023, Ben Griffin 2017 and John Inman in 1984, when Inman won the NCAA title.

Bertagnole won the Fighting Irish Classic at Notre Dame in the fall. That was one of four top-10 finishes. He also was fifth in the NCAA Bryan Regional and Augusta Haskins Award Invitational and seventh in the Tar Heel Intercollegiate.

His scoring average of 70.19 was second on the team, the fifth-lowest in UNC single-season history and the second-best ever by a Tar Heel freshman.
