Cantú Announces Duo of Transfer Signees

Tennessee women’s golf head coach Diana Cantú announced the signings of transfers Leighton Shosted and Sophie Bierstorfer Thursday afternoon.

“I am excited to welcome Sophie and Leighton to the Lady Vol golf family,” said Cantú. “They complete our team in such a great way. Both of them are competitive and extremely passionate about leaving their mark at Tennessee. The duo brings energy and excitement to this program. They will represent us very well!”

Shosted, an incoming senior from Grand Canyon University, posted a 73.32 adjusted scoring average during the 2023-24 season.

Additionally, the Mesa, Arizona, native posted six top-10 finishes last season, including a runner-up finish at the Timpanogos Collegiate invitational and third-place finish at the White Sands Collegiate.

Prior to her time at GCU, Shosted spent two seasons at Utah Valley. In her sophomore season, Shosted set Utah Valley’s single-season scoring record and registered eight rounds of par or better. During her freshman year, Shosted earned All-WAC Second Team honors and won the UTRGV Invitational individual title.

“Leighton’s experience is going to be great for our team,” said Cantú. “She has proven herself at both schools she has competed at, rising at the top spot every time. She has fun competing and loves making a lot of birdies. Rocky Top is a great spot to help her get ready for professional golf as she enters her final collegiate season.”

Bierstorfer, an incoming sophomore coming from Miami, competed in three tournaments her freshman season and posted a 73.90 scoring average.

At the 2024 Gators Invitational, Bierstorfer tallied a 1-under 71 in the second round, which marked the best round of the tournament by a freshman.

Prior to her collegiate experience, Bierstorfer was a member of the Italian National team and won the U16 Italian Match Play Championship.

“I’ve known Sophie since she was a junior golfer,” Cantú said. “She is athletic and strong. She is mature and determined to succeed at Tennessee.”
