Duke Finishes in 10th at Fighting Irish Classic

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Using the third-best round of the day, the Duke men’s golf team moved up the leaderboard during the final round of the Fighting Irish Classic on Monday, Oct. 7. Duke shot a 1-over, 281, in the third round and secured a 10th-place finish overall at 27-over, 867. Bryan Kim finished as the low Blue Devil, ending in 21st place with a 5-over, 215, for his tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED: ROUND THREE

• The Duke lineup started its round on hole No. 10 and finished with a 1-over, 281, as a team in the third round.
• Three different Duke players shot an even-par, 70, in the third round – Kelly Chinn, Bryan Kim and Luke Sample.
• Chinn stumbled early with a bogey on No. 11 but recovered quickly, pouring in three birdies across the four-hole stretch of holes No. 14-17. Making the turn at 2-under, Chinn dropped back-to-back bogeys on holes No. 2 and 3 but played level golf for the remainder of his round, rolling in six straight pars to finish off his best round of the tournament. Overall, Chinn finished in a tie for 59th place, at 13-over, 223.
• Kim played his first nine holes at 2-over, 35, following three bogeys alongside a lone birdie on No. 16. The sophomore then played his final nine holes at 2-under, courtesy of back-to-back birdies on holes No. 4 and 5, while steadily adding seven pars to finish out his even-par round. Overall, Kim led Duke with a 21st-place finish at 5-over, 215.
• Sample fought back from a slow start to his round, closing with a flurry of birdies to sign for an even-par, 70, in the third round. A 4-over start through three holes was chipped away at with a birdie on the 210-yard, par-3, 14th and the senior made the turn to the front-nine at 3-over. A bogey on No. 1 was Sample’s last blemish on the scorecard, as he then poured in four birdies across a five-hole span of holes No. 4-8, to play the front-nine at 3-under and finish at even-par. Overall, Sample logged a tie for 22nd place at 6-over, 216.
• John Peters rounded out Duke’s scoring on Monday, signing for a 1-over, 71. Peters got into red figures with a birdie on No. 13, but dropped shots on his next four holes to make the turn at 3-over.
