Virgilio Paz Top Five After Day One in South Carolina


Junior Virgilio Paz of University of Missouri men’s golf is among the leaders after the opening day of the Colleton River Collegiate.

Paz carded a two-round score of -2 (70-72) to lead the Tigers and placed fifth on Sunday. After a slow start to his day, Paz finished the first round strong with five birdies in his final 14 holes – against no bogeys – including a -3 tally in final five holes of the round. He then responded with an even-par 72 in the second 18 of the day, again finishing with two birdies in his final three holes to move into the top five.

Graduate student Mattias Varjun just missed his best 36-hole score of the season, placing 11th overall after day one with a score of +1. Varjun carded a 73 in the opening round before bettering his score by one stroke in round two with a 72. He is eying his first top-20 finish of the season with a strong finish on Monday.

Veikka Viskari (78-76), Trent Mierl (76-78) and Brock Snyder (76-80) rounded out the day for Mizzou.

As a team, the Tigers sit in a tie for sixth place of 16 schools at the tournament with a team score of +17 (295-298).

The final day of action begins on Monday morning, teeing off the first hole at 6:55 a.m. CT.
