Sun Devil Men’s Golf Round One Leader in Cabo

The Sun Devil men’s golf team is part of a solid 14-team field at the Cabo Collegiate this week — a tournament it won last year — and is leading the 2025 field after the first round Sunday.

The Sun Devils shot 8-under 276, led by a usual suspect (senior Preston Summerhays) and great first round by sophomore Fifa Laopakdee who is tied for third at 3-under 68 at the Twin Dolphin Golf Club, as 18 rounds will continue Monday and Tuesday.

 

Summerhays is tied for individual lead with a 4-under 67, as he posted seven birdies and was 5-under on the par-4 holes. Junior Michael Mjaaseth also is at 3-under 68.

The 14-team field includes seven top-25 teams, with Ole Miss (1), ASU (3), Oklahoma State (6), Vanderbilt (14), Arizona (17), Texas Tech (19) and Florida State (21) all competing.

OUR TOURNAMENT HISTORY HERE

Last year, the Sun Devil men’s golf team won the 15-team Cabo Collegiate in convincing fashion. ASU won the tournament by nine strokes, and did it shooting 11-under 273 in the final round, as only two other teams were under par in the third round. Three Sun Devils finished in the top-10, led by Preston Summerhays who shot an 8-under 205 and finished third. Michael Mjaaseth tied for second in par-5 holes, shooting 7-under. 

ABOUT THE COURSE

Designed by PGA champion Fred Couples, Twin Dolphin Club’s 18-hole course is built into the mountainous Baja desert, combining rippling fairways and fast greens with dramatic arroyos, natural bunkers and phenomenal views of the Sea of Cortez. It’s a challenging course as fun as Cabo itself.
