BLUFFTON, South Carolina- The Rutgers men’s golf team completed the Colleton River Invitational tournament on Monday and were fueled by impressive performances from their underclassmen.
Freshman Bennett Espenshade earned his best collegiate finish this weekend, finishing top-30 in the field and tied for 26th with fellow teammate and senior captain Noah Kumar. Fellow freshman Argyle Downes cracked the top-40, finishing tied for 35th overall, while Weston Jones and Derek Gutierrez also finished on the leaderboard.
Shutte was proud of the way his group handled the course.
“The core group established that they could play in any conditions” said Shutte. “The freshmen were the highlight of the tournament, Bennett had his best finish, and Argyle had his nice streak at the beginning.”
The Pete Dye constructed course proved to be every bit of the challenge that head coach Rob Shutte expected it to be.
“The course set up was really fair but tough” said Shutte. “We love those tough setups because it exposes the guys to what they need to work on.”
The Scarlet Knights finished 13th overall, finishing above fierce rival Penn State, and edging out Big Ten foe Minnesota along the way.
Another freshman success story came from Max Jackson. Competing in his second-ever collegiate event and second time as an individual, he finished 14th overall on the individual leaderboard.
“It was great to get Max out there again,” said Shutte. “He didn’t travel at all in the fall, so just being with the team and putting the jersey on to continue to get the nerves out was great to see.”
The Scarlet Knights tee off once again in two weeks, on March 17th and 18th, at the “Johnnie-O” in Sea Island, Georgia. RU hosts the event for the third-straight year as one of the highlights of the season.
