Men’s Golf Finishes Eighth at Mississippi State


University of Missouri men’s golf improved its standing by two spots on the final day of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, finishing eighth at the tournament hosted by Mississippi State.

Junior Virgilio Paz and sophomore Veikka Viskari finished tied for first on the team with a three-round tally of +5. Paz finished the tournament with a one-over 73, carding three birdies during the final round of play to move up 13 spots on the leaderboard and finish 29th (74-74-73). Viskari, meanwhile, added three birdies on the day to match his teammate in the standings (74-69-78), while his 14 birdies over the 54-hole tournament tied for the fourth-most in the field.

Freshman Trent Mierl rebounded on the final day of the tournament and led the Tigers with an even-par 72, collecting four birdies on the day to move up 19 spots on the leaderboard. Sophomore Brock Snyder (72-76-79), Trevor Mierl (72-81-76) and Mattias Varjun (74-74-83) rounded out the scoring for the Tigers.

Overall, Mizzou passed Southern Miss and Louisiana Monroe to finish eighth of 13 teams in the final standings. No. 3 Ole Miss won the tournament with a record-breaking score of -39, finishing 33 strokes ahead of No. 15 Alabama in second.

The Tigers now turn their attention toward the postseason, competing in the SEC Championship, starting on Wednesday, April 23.
