Cal Beats Virginia In First Round
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The California women’s golf team shook up the ACC on Friday, knocking off No. 11 Virginia 3-2 in the first round of match play of the ACC Championship before ultimately falling to No. 3 Florida State 3-0 in the semifinals.
Seeded eighth heading into the tournament, Cal finished 54 holes of stroke play in a tie for fifth place. With the top six teams in stroke play earning a berth in the match play round, the Bears secured the No. 6 seed due to tiebreaking protocol and got by the third-seeded Cavaliers in thrilling fashion.
“The team came to play this week,” Cal head coach Sofie Aagaard said.
Junior Adora Liu and sophomore Constance Fouillet notched victories against Virginia to help Cal tie the score at 2-2. The match came down to freshman Claudia Lara Miravitlles’ showdown against the Cavaliers’ Rebecca Skoler, and she found herself down by two holes with two to play. Miravitlles stormed back to win the final two holes in regulation to force a playoff.
On the first hole of the playoff, Miravitlles hit a 6-iron to within 15 feet of the cup and tapped in for a birdie while Skoler missed her birdie try to give Cal the victory. The Bears then turned around and had to face the Seminoles 45 minutes later.
“It was a quick turnaround. That was hard as we had given most of our all in the morning,” Aagaard said. “All in all, it was a great week.”
The Bears will now await their NCAA Regional assignment, which will be announced Wednesday at 10 a.m. PT on the GOLF Channel.
