Cal Finishes With Strongest Round Of Tournament
GOLD CANYON, Ariz. – The California women’s golf team had its best round at the NCAA Gold Canyon Regional on Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough to crack the top five and advance to the NCAA Championships.
The Golden Bears carded a 5-over par and finished 28-over for the tournament, putting them in eighth place in the overall standings. Cal was in contention for the top five for most of the day but ended up finishing five shots behind fifth-place Cal State Fullerton.
“Five strokes from qualifying for nationals is something that stings at the moment and will be used as fuel for future work and training until next year,” Cal head coach Sofie Aagaard said. “As disappointed as we are, we have seen huge progress this spring. It is exciting to look to the future and see what more progress we can have. I am proud of how this team represented Cal and the program, throughout the week and until the final hole.”
Junior Anna Molloy had her second-best round of the season Wednesday, carding a 1-under 71 that included birdies on each of the first two holes to get the Bears’ round off to a strong start. Sophomore Constance Fouillet shot even-par.
Junior Adora Liu finished as the Bears’ top individual for the regional, tying for 25th place at 7-over par. Fouillet tied for 28th at 8-over.
Senior Kaylyn Noh shot 2-over par Wednesday in her final round at Cal and was among a group of golfers along with Molloy that tied for 33rd at 10-over par.
The Bears are expected to bring back a solid core of returners next season, led by Fouillet and Liu, who were the team’s top two scorers this year.
