The fifth-ranked Arizona State men’s golf team played solid all week and is headed to the NCAA Championships after a great regional held in Bremerton, WA, at Gold Mountain Gold Club.
The Sun Devils finished at 25-under 839 (286-274-279), just three shots back of Florida (28-under 836). More importantly, the Sun Devils were 26 strokes better than the cut line, and that meant no stress for a team that has as good of a chance to win the national title as anyone.
Sophomore Connor Williams shot 7-under 209 (73-65-71) and finished fifth, while freshman Peer Wernicke tied for eighth at 4-under 140 (69-71-72).
Josele Ballester shot 3-under 213 (70-72-71) and tied for ninth in his final NCAA regional, while junior Michael Mjaaseth did the same by shooting a 7-under 65 in his final round, one of just three people to shoot 7-under.
There were only three rounds of 7-under 65 in the tournament, and Connor Williams (second) and Michael Mjaaseth (third) had two of them.
The May 23-28 NCAA Champoinships will be held at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad.
Coach Thurmond Regional Note
Coach Thurmond has reached the NCAA Championship in seven of eight chances at ASU. Since becoming a head coach in 2002, his squads have made the NCAA Championship in 19 of his 23 chances, missing only in 2024, 2016, 2011 and 2007.
Not Easy To Make It
Nine top-30 teams won’t be making the trip to the NCAA Championships this year, as LSU (6), North Carolina (10), San Diego State (15), Alabama (16), Utah (17), Duke (21), SMU (24), Long Beach State (26) and Louisville (27) all will be staying home. Last year nine top-30 teams didn’t advance, including five top-10 teams, as third-ranked ASU, Ole Miss (7), Arkansas (8), Alabama (9), Washington (10), Georgia (20), Oregon (24), Duke (25) and Northwestern (28) all didn’t make the regional cut.
