State in Fifth Heading into Final Day of Carmel Cup


Pebble Beach, Calif. – Mississippi State used strong performances across the scorecard to improve their score in the second round from Pebble Beach. After 36 holes of play, the Bulldogs are fifth (743, 23-over) and four shots back 22nd ranked Razorbacks of Arkansas (739, 19-over).
 
After a 20-over (380) first round, State improved their score by 17 strokes in the second round, the second-best team performance on the day (3-over, 147). Through the first two rounds, MSU is leading the field on holes that are par-3 where they are 4-under. After only carding 9 birdies as a team in the first round, State sunk 20 in the second round.
 
On a mostly sunny Saturday at Pebble Beach, defending national champion and consensus No. 1 Stanford sits solely in first place at -7 (713).
 

No. 11 Texas A&M finished second after 36 holes with a score of 2-over (722). No. 15 Oklahoma State finished third with 16-over (736) while No. 24 Texas Tech sits in sixth and is currently 6 strokes back of State at 29-over (749). No. 50 Oklahoma (36-over,756) and No. 33 Vanderbilt (40-over, 760) round out the field.
 
The Bulldogs were led throughout the day by Julia Lopez Ramirez and Abbey Daniel who are both tied for 8th heading into the final round.  
 
Lopez Ramirez carded a second-round score of 74 (+2) to bring her two-day total to 1-over (145). Lopez Ramirez followed her three-birdie performance in the first round by rolling in three more in round two. Through the first 36 holes of the season, Lopez Ramirez has parred 24 of them.
 
After a bogey on the first hole of the day, Daniel used a stretch of pars on holes 2-8 before sinking three birdies on the back nine to finish the day side by side with Lopez Ramirez at 1-over (145).
 
The duo of Ashley Gilliam and Hannah Levi are both tied for 23rd with a score of 7-over (151). Gilliam used a fast start to climb up the leaderboard from tied for 27th to finish tied for 23rd. The senior sunk four birdies on the front nine and has six for the event. Levi flourished on the back nine, carding three birdies and parring four.
 
Jarutrawee Khotchagrai matched her career-best 18 on Saturday with an even-par 72 to move up the leaderboard from tied for 42nd to tied for 31st. Khotchagrai sunk 4 birdies on the day and parred 12.
