UNC’s Krista Junkkari and Kayla Smith shot 1-over-par 72s on day one of the 2022 NCAA Ann Arbor Women’s Golf Regional Monday at the University of Michigan Golf Course.
The Tar Heels are tied for sixth place in the 12-team field at 15-over 299, five strokes out of fourth place. The top four teams after Wednesday’s third round will advance to the NCAA Championship, which begins May 20 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Arkansas has the lead after round one after shooting 7-over 291. Washington and Michigan are tied for second at 9 over par and Virginia is tied for fourth with top-seeded San Jose State at 10 over.
Carolina is tied with Xavier at 15 over, one shot ahead of Ohio State, Pepperdine and UCF.
Junkkari and Smith are tied for fifth place in the individual standings at 1 over, three strokes behind Arkansas’ Ela Anacona and Old Dominion’s Jana Melichova. The top two individuals not on one of the four advancing teams also qualifies to play in Scottsdale.
Junnkari was 1 under after making birdies at 11 and 13, but fell back after a double bogey on the 17th hole. Smith made a team-high 13 pars in addition to two birdies and three bogeys.
Nicole Adam shot 77, Natalia Aseguinolaza had a 78 and Crista Izuzquiza finished with an 82. Junkkari and Izuzquiza shared the UNC lead today with three birdies apiece.
Second-round action begins Tuesday at 8 a.m. The Tar Heels are paired with Ohio State and Pepperdine.
