Cats In Middle of Crowded Pack After First Round in Illinois

OLYMPIA FIELDS, ILL. – Arizona Men’s Golf finished the opening round of the Fighting Illini Invite in a tie for eighth at 9-over par. The Wildcats were led by freshman Filip Jakubcik who carded an even round of 70 and in a tie for 13th. A challenging day at Olympia Fields Country Club greeted the entire field as only three of the 15 teams in the event broke par on Friday.

“The last three holes of the day really challenged our team, and we ended our round with on a sour note,” said head coach Jim Anderson. “Our guys got off to a steady and consistent start to the day and posted quality scores throughout the day. We will address our plan for the seventh, eighth and nine holes and make the necessary adjustments to improve in Saturday’s second round.”

The Cats concluded Friday in a three-way tie for eighth with Florida State and Pepperdine and enter the weekend amid a loaded pack of 11 teams separated by nine strokes. Jakubcik was joined by senior Chase Sienkiewicz in the top 30 of the individual leaderboards after the first round.

Arizona was at its best on Friday on Olympia Field’s longest holes, shooting 2-under on par 5’s that ranked fifth among all teams. Sienkiewicz was tied for the lead in par-5 scoring at 2-under on the day.

The Wildcats will begin the second round at 8 a.m. (CST) on Saturday and will play alongside Northwestern and Florida State.
