Olympia Fields, Ill. – Arizona State Men’s Golf hits the road this weekend to the Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club hosted by the University of Illinois.

THE LINEUP

The Sun Devils will send Josele Ballester, Ryggs Johnston, Michael Mjsaaseth, Preston Summerhays, and Luke Potter to Illinois.

COACH THURMOND ON EXCITEMENT FOR THIS WEEKEND

“We’re happy about the way we played the first week and it was a nice start for us, but you couldn’t have a more different setting and competition. To go the Midwest and play a super tough course is a whole different challenge for us. We’re ASU; we need to be able to play in all conditions and in all places so it’s a big test for us. We had success there last year but it’s a whole new challenge and I hope the guys are not thinking it’s going to be easy.”

VETERAN PRESENCE

ASU’s top performers from last weekend were the team veterans. Johnston’s top five showing paced ASU while Summerhays was 8-under 202 (67-65-70) and tied for 13th. Named to Haskins Award Watch List prior to the season, Summerhays birdied his last five holes of the tournament.

POTTER’S PRISTINE PUTTING

Luke Potter’s ASU debut did not disappoint. He carded 5-under 205 (68-67-70) to finish in a tie for 24th overall. He led The Sun Devils in birdies Friday with seven including four of his last five holes.

MJSAASETH BREAKS INTO THE LINEUP

Michael Mjsaaseth will compete in his first team competition for The Sun Devils this weekend. The true-freshman played in the individual tournament at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, finishing 14-under par and tying for the win in his first ASU appearance.

COACH SUTTON ON MICHAEL MJSAASETH BREAKING INTO THE LINEUP

“We are very excited about Michael. He is an interesting situation in that midway through the Maui Jim qualifying round he got called up to play in the World Amateur Championships in Paris. He was unable to play in the qualifier, but he proved himself not only in the individual field tying for first but also in the World Amateur Championship where he came in the top 10. We’re very excited to have him in the lineup, and he’s playing some great golf right now.”
