WSU Tied for Third at the Husky Invitational Heading into Tuesday’s Final Round

BREMERTON, Wash. – After the first round of play, the Washington State men’s golf team sits in a tie for third place after shooting 5-over; 293 at the Husky Invitational to kick off the 2022 fall season.

After 18 holes of play at the Gold Mountain Golf Course, WSU headed into the second round one stroke shy of second-place Utah and seven strokes away from first-place Long Beach State. WSU posted the best par-3 score in the first round, as the Cougs carded 5-over on par-3 holes.

For the second-consecutive year, junior Preston Bebich opened his season by carding 1-under; 71 in the first round of the Husky Invitational. The Gig Harbor, Washington native collected four birdies during his first 18 holes of play to finish the round in a tie for third.

Senior Pono Yanagi and junior Jaden Cantafio each finished the opening round of the Husky Invitational inside the top 25 on the player leaderboard. Yanagi shot even par; 72 in his first go-around on the Olympic Course at the Golf Mountain Golf Club. Cantafio wrapped up his first round in a tie for 23rd after carding 2-over 74.

Washington State was able to complete the second round of the Husky Invitational, however, the round was suspended due to darkness with a handful of golfers still playing out their round. When play stopped, WSU was in a tie for third with Oregon, as each Pac-12 school posted a team score of 583 (+7). The Cougars carded 2-over; 290 in the second round to end their day. Both Cantafio and Yanagi shot 1-under;71 in the second round to post their first under-par round of the season.

Second round action will resume Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 7:15 a.m. PT. Washington State will begin its third round of play at the Husky Invitational at 9:05 a.m. PT on Tuesday. Fans can follow all of the action at GolfStat.com.

Washington State also had five golfers playing in the Husky Individual Invitational over on the Cascade Course at Golf Mountain Golf Club. The Husky Individual Tournament was able to complete the first two rounds this afternoon.

Redshirt junior Tianyu Wu sits in a tie for ninth after 36 holes of play, as he shot even par; 72 in both of his rounds to end his day with a score of 142 (E). Sophomore Franklin Lydra also sits inside the top-15 for WSU, as he ended his day at 1-over; 143.
