Thomson Leads Trio of Top-25 Wolverines as U-M Finishes Fifth at Macdonald Cup

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — With a final-round tally of 68 (-2) by sophomore Hunter Thomson and a career-low 70 (E) from senior Pier-Francesco De Col, the University of Michigan men’s golf team posted a 354 total Sunday (Sept. 25) to card a 1,069 6-count-5 Macdonald Cup total to record its second straight top-five team finish to open the season.
Returning to New Haven for Yale’s home event after a runner-up finish last year, junior Jude Kim paced the first round with his career-low-tying 67 (-3). His tally along with junior Will Anderson‘s even-par 70 and Thomson’s 71, the Maize and Blue opened with a 355 first-round tally using the tournament’s 6-count-5 format.
Positioned fourth, U-M headed straight into its second 18 of Saturday’s opening day and used a 70 from Thomson, a 71 from Kim and a pair of 72s from Anderson and De Col to etch a 360 to end the first day with a 715 36-hole total and a sixth position on the leaderboard.
Getting off to a solid start in the shotgun-formatted final round, Thomson used three birdies to record his first sub-70 round of the season with a 68 (-2). With a birdie erasing his only bogey on the round, De Col followed with 16 pars to record a career-best 70 (E), while Anderson also closed with a 70.
