Three Deacs Set to Compete in Genesis Collegiate Showcase

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Following a team win at the Battle at Briar’s Creek earlier this week, the Wake Forest men’s golf team is set to bring select players to the Genesis Collegiate Showcase Monday at historic Riviera Country Club.

The Demon Deacons will bring junior Michael Brennan, sophomore Scotty Kennon and sophomore Marshall Meisel to the 2023 Genesis Collegiate Showcase.

The club has been host to the 1948 US Open, the 1983 and 1995 PGA Championships, the 1998 US Senior Open, the 2017 US Amateur and is the official site of the 2028 Olympics golf tournament.

Last year, Brennan took home the title and earned the lone amateur qualification for the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational later that week at Riviera. In the seven-year history of the event no one has ever won the title twice and Wake Forest is the only school to have two champions (Brennan – 2022 and Will Zalatoris – 2015).

Back-to-Back Individual Titles

The spring season has been a great one so far for the Demon Deacons with a team title at the Battle at Briar’s Creek and two individual titles from Brennan at the Southwestern Invitational and senior Mark Power at the Battle at Briar’s Creek.

Brennan Earns Fifth Title at the Southwestern Invitational

Brennan joined exclusive company, capturing his fifth collegiate title at the Southwestern Invitational individual title at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif.

The Leesburg, Va. native battled two early bogies, recovering to finish the last 14 holes 5-under-par to give himself the clubhouse lead. After waiting for two hours in the clubhouse, Brennan held onto the lead to capture his fifth title of his career. He won by one stroke over Texas’ Keaton Vo. As a team, Wake Forest finished tied for eighth at 21-over-par.

For the second consecutive day, Brennan carded the low score on the course, posting a 69 (-3) to overcome a three-stroke deficit coming into the day. He was also down three strokes going into the turn and was flawless on the back nine Wednesday, carding birdies on the 15th, 16th and 18th.

This marks the fifth time in Brennan’s career he has captured an individual title putting him alongside Jay Haas, Lanny Wadkins and Cameron Young to have five titles to their name at Wake Forest. Only three Demon Deacons have more than five titles in their collegiate career: Bill Haas (10), Gary Hallberg (9) and…
