PALOS VERDES, Calif. – The Illinois women’s golf team opened the Therese Hession Regional Challenge in 11th place after carding a first round total of 295 (+11) heading into Monday’s second round at Palos Verdes Golf Club.
Crystal Wang paced the Illini with an even-par 71 and sits tied for 13th place. Wang recorded. a joint team-high four birdies on the day.
Mattie Frick is tied for 38th after an opening round 74 (+3). Frick recorded the first hole-in-one of her collegiate career on No. 2, a 200-yard par 3.
“It was a good looking shot from start to finish,” Frick said. “What made it really special is that my mom, grandma, sisters, coach and two of my teammates were there to celebrate it with me.”
Frick also tallied four birdies during her round, including back-to-back birdies on No. 16 and 17.
Siyan Chen and Isabel Sy each fired rounds of 75 (+4) and are tied for 44th, while Lexanne Halama posted a 76 (+5) and is tied for 56th.
The Fighting Illini carded a total of 13 birdies, tied for the seventh most of all teams, and posted the fifth-lowest scoring average (4.67) on par 5s.
Baylor leads the tournament at 282 (-2), with hosts Ohio State (+2) and Stanford (+2) and San Jose State (+2) all tied for second at 286. Baylor’s Silje Ohma leads the field individually at 66 (-5).
Monday’s second round begins with tee times starting at 11:00 a.m. CT.
