PALM DESERT, Calif. – Javier Barcos is tied for second and Martín León is just two shots behind his teammate sharing sixth while the University of Utah men’s golf team is in a tie for third after one round of play at the Desert Intercollegiate, which began with 18 holes on Wednesday at the Classic Club Golf Course.
“Javi got off to a bit of a roller coaster start,” said head coach Garrett Clegg, “but had a great finish and had put himself in a great position after round one. Martín played really well today, especially during the toughest stretch of weather. Unfortunately, he made a couple of bogeys late in the round, but I’m excited for him to shoot some good scores!
“As a team, we were solid. We gave away a lot of shots on the greens. Tomorrow we need to find a way to save a few more shots. Overall, we are in a great position after round one.”
Barcos had a difficult start to his round, alternatively posting bogeys and birdies before finishing the front nine at even, but he found his game during the second half of the day. After posting pars on No.’s 10, 11 and 12, Barcos carded three birdies over his final six holes, sending him flying up the leaderboard into a tie for second at 3-under, just two shots behind the tournament leader.
This makes back-to-back rounds under 70 for Barcos after he closed the John Burns Intercollegiate with a 64 and its his sixth round of the season in the 60s.
León spent much of the day in contention for the top spot, thanks in part to birdies on the third and sixth holes. He added another on the 15th and was 3-under through his first 15 holes before a pair of late bogeys put him at 1-under. For León, this makes four straight rounds at par or better and he’ll start play on Thursday only four strokes off the lead.
After a pair of early missteps, Brandon Robison recovered by putting up a score of 1-under over his final 13 holes, a mark that include birdies on the third and the ninth. He entered the clubhouse at 2-over and tied for 28th. Go Nakatsukasa is 4-over and tied for 49th and Tanner Telford is 5-over and sharing 61st.
As a team, the Utes shot a 2-over 290 and that score has them tied with Wyoming in third and within four shots of the squad in first place, Fresno State.
