PHOENIX, Ariz. – Senior Gile Bite Starkute led the way for No. 15 Arizona Women’s Golf in the opening day of the PING/ASU Invitational, carding a 1-under round of 71 to finish tied for eighth. The Wildcats ended the first day of the tournament in 16th place at 20-over par.
“Today was not our best day on course, which is an unfortunate situation to find ourselves in,” said head coach Laura Ianello. “My message to the team was the make our necessary adjustments and post improved rounds on Saturday. This team has had a lot of resolve this season, and I believe we will come out and play much better golf tomorrow.”
Starkute, the senior from Lithuania, shot 2-under to card a 34 on the front nine that included two birdies and seven pars. Freshman Julia Misemer had Arizona’s second-best front nine score with an even-par 36.
The Wildcats are in a crowded pack of teams that has seven programs separated by a total of eight strokes. Northwestern leads all teams after round one with a 6-under performance as a team. They lead Baylor, Oregon and Mississippi State by eight strokes going into Saturday.
