BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss women’s golf wrapped up play in the team’s opening round of action at the 2023 SEC Championship on Wednesday, as the Rebels shot a round of 295 (+7) to sit tied for tenth heading into the second round of play.
The Rebels ended their opening round at Greystone Golf and Country Club leading the field in total birdies, combining for 18 as a team. Senior Andrea Lignell led the charge for the Rebels, tallying five to open her tournament.
At the conclusion of Friday’s final round of stroke play, only the top eight remaining teams are set to advance into the bracket to play in the match play quarterfinals. The Rebels currently sit just one stroke back from the projected cut line, as the team aims to qualify for match play for the fifth straight SEC Championship.
Chiara Tamburlini opened what will be her final SEC Championship with the Rebels by logging the lone round below par for the team on the day, shooting a 71 (-1). The St. Gallen, Switzerland, native enters day two tied for ninth place overall, which is where Tamburlini finished at last year’s installment at Greystone.
Lignell, who is fresh off of her third place finish at the ANWA earlier this month, was not far behind Tamburlini at the conclusion of day one as the senior finished tied for 18th with a 73 (+1). The senior will enter her second round of action ranked second in the field in par-4 scoring (-2) amongst all golfers in attendance, trailing only individual leader Celina Sattelkau of Vanderbilt.
Sophomore Natacha Host Husted’s opening round of play would conclude with Husted sitting 36th overall at three-over par. The highlight of her day came at the end of her front nine, as the Copenhagen, Denmark, native tallied three birdies in a row to climb up into a momentary tie for first place.
Rounding out the Rebel lineup in Birmingham were the duo of Nicole Gal and Elle Johnson, who are both playing in their first SEC Tournament with the Rebels. Gal ended her first day with a 76 (+4) to sit tied for 47th, while Johnson heads into day two in 56th after shooting a 77 (+5).
The Rebels’ second round from Birmingham is set to tee off beginning at 9:10 a.m. CT tomorrow…
