PHOENIX, Ariz. – No. 19 Arizona Men’s Golf finished its second tournament of the week in second place at 27-under par at the Thunderbird Collegiate. A two-day tournament, of over 800 stokes, was decided by the final group on the final hole as Arizona State won its home tournament by one stroke. The Arizona tandem of Sam Sommerhauser and Chase Sienkiewicz were its top finishers as both finished in a tie for second place at 9-under.
“We came up a shot or two short of our goal, which was to win this event,” said head coach Jim Anderson. “While the ending was not we had hoped for, it did not discount our phenomenal play as a team over 54-holes. We had numerous guys in the lineup play some of the best golf of the season this weekend, and I am pleased to see our guys really peaking at the right time. This week was great preparation for Pac-12’s at the end of this month.”
The runner-up showing this weekend was the best individual finish by Sommerhauser in his collegiate career, surpassing his sixth-place finishes at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate and John Burns Intercollegiate in his sophomore season of 2021-22. Sienkiewicz now has four runner-up finishes for his career with his previous second-place performance coming earlier this year at the Cabo Collegiate. Freshman Zach Pollo also shot 9-under for the tournament as an individual to give Arizona a trio of golfers in second place.
The Wildcats showed a dramatic improvement from their previous participation in the Thunderbird Collegiate, surpassing its ninth place showing in 2021. Arizona will return to action in two weeks for the Pac-12 Championships, which are scheduled to begin on Friday, April 28 at Stanford Golf Course.
