The top eight teams following Friday’s final round of stroke play will advance to the match play portion of the tournament, with the quarterfinals and semifinals on Saturday and the championship round on Sunday.
The Vols were 2-under as a team on Wednesday and are tied with Arkansas ahead of day two.
During round one, Surratt made six birdies and an eagle to shoot a 64—including a 31 on his first nine holes of the day. The Indian Trail, North Carolina, native also led the 70-man field with a 3.50 par five scoring average.
Surratt’s 6-under 64 on Wednesday is tied for the lowest ever first round by an individual at the SEC Championships, as well as being tied for the third-lowest score by an individual round during any round in the event’s history.
Behind Surratt, Bryce Lewis and Josh Hill provided Tennessee with counting rounds of 1-over and are tied for 39th place going into Thursday. After opening with a 2-over score on his first nine holes, Lewis bounced back on with a 1-under 34 after the turn.
The final counting lineup round on day one came from Laurent Desmarchais, who registered a 2-over 72. The sophomore is tied for 50th place entering round two. Redshirt junior Jake Hall posted a 5-over 75 in round one and is tied for 62nd.
