ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The 13th-ranked Tennessee men’s golf team concluded competition at the SEC Championship Saturday, dropping a tightly-contested semifinal match to Vanderbilt.
Despite falling short to Vanderbilt, the Vols advanced to the semifinals for the first time in program history after defeating Mississippi State in the quarterfinals, 3-2.
Quarterfinals
Tennessee 3, Mississippi State 2
Caleb Surratt, Laurent Desmarchais and Josh Hill all captured wins in the match against the Bulldogs Saturday morning to propel the Vols to the win.
Surratt won his quarterfinal match 2-1 over Mississippi State’s Hunter Logan to clinch the first point for the Vols.
Desmarchais never trailed on the front nine, and kicked it into gear on the back nine to clinch the match on hole 15 and win, 4&3.
Hill clinched the semifinal berth for Tennessee, clinching a 5&3 win on hole 15.
Bryce Lewis had his quarterfinal match tied through 14 holes but could not hold on and fell 2&1. Jake Hall took his match tied into the 18th hole before dropping the match one down.
Semifinals
Vanderbilt 3, Tennessee 1 (1 tied)
Hall was the lone Vol to win his match and did it in dominant fashion. The redshirt junior took the lead on hole four and maintained it until hole 15 where he claimed the match to win 4&3 over Vanderbilt’s Matthew Reidel.
Despite a clutch par putt on hole 17 to send the match to the final hole, Lewis fell short by one hole to the Commodores’ Cole Sherwood. Vanderbilt’s Gordon Sargent followed that up with the Commodores’ second win of the day, defeating Desmarchais, 4&2.
After leading for the majority of the match, Hill took his semifinal against Reid Davenport to 19 holes before falling by one—which clinched the team win for Vanderbilt.
Surratt’s semifinal match against William Moll ended in a tie after the Commodore’s won to advance to the finals.
